Coaching Sessions: Emotional (Therapeutic) Journaling

Anxious. Sad. Worried. Bored. Angry. Frustrated. Stressed. Depressed. Stuck. Fearful.

These are moods, emotions or thoughts that run through our minds.

Sometimes we feel like we are living at the mercy of our circumstances, thoughts and emotions, instead of being in control of them. Without knowing how to release ourselves from those patterns, we could go into an emotional spiral.

During lockdown in 2020, I discovered Emotional (Therapeutic) Journaling. I started using Emotional Journaling as a tool to cope with my emotional turmoil. I found it to be most useful and effective in identifying root causes behind the negative thoughts and repeated patterns in my life.

What is Emotional (Therapeutic) Journaling?

Emotional Journaling isn’t your typical record of daily activities or like diary-writing.

Emotional Journaling is essentially exploring your thoughts, feelings, impulses, memories, desires and goals through the written word. It’s a method in identifying and taking action around your feelings through writing. For example, asking yourself, “What are these emotions and why am I experiencing them?”, “What are the patterns that I’m seeing here and what can I do about them?”

It is a self-awareness and self-discovery tool through which you record and reflect, and actively seek to understand who you are and what you value most at the core level.

Here’s why I find Emotional Journaling effective:

  • Helps me to understand what, why and how I was emotionally triggered by certain situations.
  • Enables me to pause and gain insights and clarity (“big picture” perspective) about myself and relationships with situations, repeated patterns, people and my self-worth, including with other aspects such as health, money.
  • Connects directly with the more soulful, intuitive part of myself and unlocks my inner wisdom. A new voice developed which was my intuition.
  • Allows me to be loving, kind and compassionate with myself, therefore I value myself even more.
  • Frees me from my shadow tendencies and habits/addictions that don’t serve my growth.
  • Empowers me to show up each day as a better version of myself.

More importantly, I find Emotional Journaling a game-changer.

What are the other benefits of Emotional Journaling?

Because Emotional Journaling is an effective tool in identifying the root causes behind emotional turmoil and repeated patterns, you learn to pause and untangle yourself from self-destructive forms of behaviour and negative thought patterns.

As a result, you feel more grounded and balanced, having inner stability and peace.

Questions about Emotional Journaling

These are the common questions that I often get asked about Emotional Journaling.

  • Do I have to be very good in English?

No, not at all 😊 You’re not writing an English novel or your literary masterpiece. Just write whatever that comes to you, and there’s no need to censor what you write. Your journaling doesn’t have to be in perfect English; it’s perfectly okay to have grammatical errors.

You can also write in any language that you are comfortable with. You can add your local lingo or slang.

Also, your content doesn’t have to be logical too. If what you write seems odd or illogical, it doesn’t matter. Just put those thoughts and feelings on paper anyway.

This is because journaling is a personal activity – it’s between you and your soul. EXPRESS yourself FREELY on paper and no judgements on yourself.

Additionally, it’s okay if you don’t have answers to your questions or you end up having more questions whilst journaling. Trust that the answers will eventually come. They may come in your next journaling entry or during meditation or at any other time, as long as you’re open to receive.

  • Do I have to journal every day?

No, you don’t have to. You can journal as and when you feel inclined to release those troubling thoughts and feelings.

But if you enjoy journaling and want to journal every day, sure, go ahead 😊 As long as you don’t make it into a chore.

Make some big changes in your life

Unfortunately, with so many distractions around us (phone, TV, internet) nowadays, not many people practise journaling.

But if you do, eventually you’ll make some BIG changes in your life. For example, creating a new career path, starting a business venture, travelling and getting out of your comfort zone or simply increasingly discover who you really are.

More importantly, as mentioned earlier, the biggest change is showing up each day as a better version of yourself.
